Qawwali is a form of devotional music that has its roots particularly in Pakistan and India. The word 'Qawwali' is derived from the Arabic word 'qaul' which means 'to speak'. Qawwali is usually performed by a group of musicians, known as qawwals, who use their voice and instruments to create a powerful and spiritual atmosphere that is both uplifting and emotional. Qawwali is believed to have originated in the 13th century in Sufi shrines, and is performed and listened to all over the world today.

In Pakistan, Qawwali is an integral part of the country's cultural heritage. The music has been popularized by the famous qawwals such as Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Sabri Brothers, and Aziz Mian. Qawwali is usually performed during religious festivals and ceremonies, and other spiritual occasions.

One of the distinctive features of Qawwali is the use of 'call-and-response' singing, where the lead singer (known as the 'ustad') sings a phrase and the other qawwals (known as 'chorus') repeat it. This creates a harmonious and unified sound that is both powerful and moving. The lyrics of Qawwali are often in Urdu and Persian, and they typically revolve around the themes of love, devotion, and spirituality.

The Sabri Brothers are a legendary qawwali group from Pakistan who have made an indelible mark on the music and culture of the country. The group was formed in 1956 by Ghulam Farid Sabri and Maqbool Sabri, who were born in Kalyana, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, India. They moved to Karachi, Pakistan after the partition of India in 1947.

The Sabri Brothers gained popularity in the 1960s and 1970s with their soulful and powerful performances of qawwali. They're also known for their humanitarian work, particularly their efforts to promote interfaith harmony in Pakistan. They performed at concerts and festivals organized by different religious communities, and their music was seen as a bridge between different faiths and cultures. Their influence on Pakistani music and culture continues to this day, and their legacy is celebrated by music lovers all over the world.
